KFC and McDonald's Add EV Charging to China Drive-Throughs
KFC and McDonald's are installing electric vehicle charging stations at their drive-throughs in China, marking a shift towards sustainability and convenience.
KFC is adding electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its drive-throughs across China, where it operates over 7,000 locations. Yum China (百胜中国), which licenses KFC and Pizza Hut in mainland China and Hong Kong, announced this initiative in its Q1 2023 earnings report.
McDonald's China is also upgrading its infrastructure with EV chargers, responding to consumer demand for convenience. The exact number of locations receiving chargers remains unspecified, but both brands are integrating sustainability into their strategies amid rising competition.
Chloe He, Director of Asia-Pacific Corporate Strategy at Yum China, noted that this initiative is part of a broader convenience strategy. Customers are prioritizing speed and immediate fulfilment. EV charging stations and app-based pickup scheduling are central to this vision.
This trend follows a significant increase in charging infrastructure. The China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance reported that the country added 3.8 million public and private charging stations in 2022, bringing the total to 5.2 million. Most of these stations are in urban areas. By placing chargers in suburban and highway locations, KFC and McDonald's are targeting underserved EV users.
Yum China reported 26.8 billion RMB ($3.9 billion) in revenue for Q1 2023, buoyed by a post-pandemic recovery in dining habits. However, inflation and rising operational costs are pressuring margins, making efficiency and unique offerings vital for growth. McDonald's has not disclosed specific revenue figures for its China operations but emphasizes expansion and localisation in its strategy.
The addition of EV charging stations reflects a cultural shift in how fast-food chains approach sustainability. Historically criticized for their environmental impact, these brands are now aligning with China's carbon neutrality goals, aiming for peak emissions by 2030 and net-zero by 2060. Such initiatives could encourage more private-sector participation in achieving these targets.
Yet, sustainability advocates urge caution. "While EV chargers are a step forward, they address only one aspect of the fast-food industry’s environmental footprint," said Chen Wei, a renewable energy consultant in Shanghai. "Supply chain emissions, single-use plastics, and food waste remain significant challenges."
Consumer response will be crucial in evaluating these initiatives. Preliminary data from Yum China’s pilot sites shows increased traffic at drive-throughs with EV chargers, especially during peak hours. However, these benefits may be short-lived without broader incentives to decarbonize operations.
Globally, McDonald’s aims for a 36% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across its supply chain by 2030. Yum China has not made a similar public commitment but cites its sustainability framework, "Recipe for Good," as key to its strategy. The speed and scale of EV charging rollouts may test this commitment.
Currently, KFC and McDonald’s are catching up. Starbucks China has introduced EV chargers at several drive-through locations, while domestic players like Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡) leverage their tech-savvy formats for localized innovations.
The question remains whether adding EV infrastructure will change consumer habits. Use rates for retail-installed EV chargers have been inconsistent, as many consumers prioritize dedicated charging stations. Additionally, it’s unclear if the chargers will be free or subsidized, which could affect adoption rates.
The stakes extend beyond profits. If successful, these efforts could set new standards for the intersection of sustainability and business strategy in fast food. The industry’s next moves will be closely monitored by competitors and policymakers alike.
